VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN)—A Vicksburg homeless man by the name of Christoper “Wayne” Breckinridge has passed away. The news of his passing was announced on Sunday over social media.

Wayne was typically seen around the Walmart plaza and he is a former Naval combat medic, who was discharged in or around 2005. Earlier this year, Wayne was diagnosed with pneumonia and learned that his cancer had spread into his lungs, bones, and spine.

The announcement of Wayne’s death by Stacy Hartley:

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Wayne who most people know from being homeless for many years around the Walmart area here in Vicksburg. Many people have helped him out in many ways over the years. Many people in our community came together with us the past several months after Wayne got diagnosed with cancer to help keep him in a hotel for well over a month, kept him with an endless supply of food at all times, able to get his medications for the first time since he got sick, helped get him all new clothes, shoes and hygiene items. He was a kind soul who touched the lives of so many in Vicksburg. Wayne was known for his willingness to help others and try to keep everyone safe inside the stores and in the parking lot even in difficult circumstances. He will be deeply missed by his friends and neighbors, who cherished his presence.

Being Wayne was homeless with no family to claim his body he would have a pauper’s funeral. I am hoping to at least get him a real casket and a small casket spray (flowers). Wayne was 6”8 and I just can’t stand the thought of him being buried in a heavy-duty cardboard box because that’s what is used in a pauper’s burial. I just feel in my heart he deserves to be put in a casket that he can fit in and also have a small spray of flowers. He is no different than myself or anyone else just because he was homeless and had no family.

If anyone feels in their heart they would like to help with getting him a casket and flowers you can send it by Venmo or Cash App or contact me no amount is too small. Once all of his arrangements are done I will post it for the ones that would like to come and be a part of laying him to rest. Thank you to everyone that has helped Wayne in any way and thank you for all the prayers for him. He is at peace now no longer suffering and is in his mom’s arms again.
