Good Samaritans Secure Shelter for Veteran Amid Freezing Temperatures

VICKSBURG, Miss. – After Christoper “Wayne” Breckinridge was released from the hospital yesterday after being diagnosed with pneumonia and learning that his cancer has spread into his lungs, bones, and spine, some Good Samaritans have found him a place to stay during the subfreezing weather.
Wayne, a local homeless man who is seen around the Wal-Mart plaza, is a former Naval combat medic, who was discharged in or around 2005.
In a post originally made by Jordan Hartley, funds were being raised to “help find a temporary arrangement until Medicaid and the paperwork with the VA are completed.”
Currently, Hartley and her mother Stacy are trying to get a copy of Wayne’s discharge papers, known as DD-214, to be able to take him to the VA to get him treatment. While the Hartleys, and others, are helping him get his paperwork in order, the cold weather, and Wayne’s diagnoses made it unsafe for him to sleep outdoors.

“We are able to get Wayne a few nights with the donations sent in. Any further donations will go towards extending his stay and help with other living essentials and essentials if he has to return to the street as all of his belongings were stolen. Thank you everyone for the prayers, helpful ideas, advice, and donations! Also to help ease the minds of the uncertain Chief Penny also contributed donations. I will keep everyone updated as much as possible. Again thank you everyone!” said Jordan Hartley in an update.
An account has been set up at the Quality Inn for anyone interested in paying towards his room. To donate, call the Quality Inn front desk at 601-619-7799.
