City Recognizes September as National Recovery Month

The City of Vicksburg Board of Mayor and Aldermen officially passed a proclamation recognizing September as National Recovery Month.

At the regular BOMA meeting held Tuesday, Sept. 8, Mayor Willis Thompson read a proclamation declaring the city recognized the efforts of the month.

NRM was established in 1989 by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to promote evidence-based treatment and recovery practices. It also celebrates the nations vibrant community and honors all those who help make recovery possible.

City’s Commitment to Recovery

By declaring the proclamation, the City of Vicksburg recognizes healing from substance abuse and mental health challenges is possible and individuals in recovery make meaningful contributions to their families, neighborhoods and communities.

By supporting the initiative, the city respects that treatment, recovery, peer, and family support, in addition to stable housing, meaningful employment, education, and strong community connections can play vital roles in helping individual build healthy and productive lives.

Support Systems for Recovery

Vicksburg in partnership with the Ninth District Intervention Court is committed to providing accountability, support, treatment connections and opportunities for individuals working toward lasting recovery.

On hand to accept the proclamation from Mayor Thompson was Judge Toni Walker Terrett and Judge James Chaney.
