Martin Shields Jr

Hinds County, Miss.-Sunday night was a true tragedy for the Hinds County Sheriff’s Department as one of their own was killed in the line of duty. The fallen Deputy has been identified as 37-year-old Martin Shields Jr., who was killed after responding to a domestic call in Terry, Mississippi.

“Deputy Shields died a hero,” Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones said. “He died while responding to a call for service to assist someone in need. He fulfilled his assignment and his God-given mission on earth. Pray for his family, his friends, the many lives he touched, and the men and women of the HCSO as we all prepare for a final salute. There’s absolutely no way I could ever imagine or prepare to tell a family their deputy will not be coming home from their tour of duty. However, tragically, I found myself in that situation late this evening.”

According to a press release, Hinds County Deputies were called to a home on Midway Road to accompany a woman to get her belongings. When the Deputy arrived at the home, 42-year-old Eric Brown opened fire and killed Deputy Shields. A civilian was also struck by a bullet(injuries unknown at this time).

Eric Brown(suspect)

The suspect, Eric Brown, was found deceased inside the home which appeared to be from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The SWAT Team was called to the scene along with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation. This case is still under investigation.

Deputy Shields had been employed with the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office for nine months. The department is asking for prayers for his family and friends during this difficult time.
