Elderly Couple Killed in a Mississippi House Fire

An elderly couple was killed in a Mississippi house fire last week.

Deputies with the George County Sheriff’s Office responded to a tragic structure fire in the Barton community on January 9, 2025, at approximately 10:11 PM. The fire claimed the lives of Rachel Ware, age 75, and Davis Ware, age 85. Both individuals were residents of the home involved in the fire.

The Mississippi State Fire Marshall’s Office is currently working alongside the George County Sheriff’s Office to investigate the incident. Preliminary findings by the Fire Marshall indicate that the fire appears to have been accidental in nature.

George County Sheriff, Mitchell Mixon has also spoken with George County Coroner, Deeann Murrah, who stated that she has ruled the deaths as accidental due to smoke inhalation. Further details will be provided as the investigation progresses.

Sheriff’s Office personnel and other emergency responders extend their condolences to the Ware family and friends during this difficult time.

Rachel Buckley Ware, age 75 and Davis C. “DC” Ware, age 85, passed away January 09, 2025.             

Mrs. Rachel Ware is preceded in death by her mother, Sallie G. Westbrook Buckley; father, George Clerance Buckley; siblings, James Buckley, Mack Author Buckley, and Eva Rae Harrison.

Mr. DC Ware is preceded in death by his mother, Audie Jewel Jackson Ware; father, LC Ware; siblings, Christine Clark Edwards, Nell Germany, and Carlton Ware, and Howard Harlston Ware.    

They are preceded in death by a granddaughter, Cassandra Leann Taylor.

Mrs. Rachel is survived by her siblings, David and Peggy Buckley, Liller Mae Parker, Frank and Phyllis Buckley, Clara Jean Ates, Ben and Vickie Buckley, Paul and Marie Buckley, Sonlock and Pat Buckley, Anthony and Betty Buckley, Linda and Gary Dearman, Mart and Benita Buckley, Tim and Vikie Buckley, Deborah and Terry Winnette, Randall and Becky Buckley.      

Mr. Davis C. Ware is survived by his brother, Larry and Pat Ware.

Those left to cherish their memories include their children, Diane and Mike Blackwell, Geraldine and Dalton Ballinger, and Lamar and Margaret Ware; grandchildren, Matthew and Julie Taylor, Catrina and PJ Parker, Jerrica and Tyler Mims, Jared and Michelle Ballinger, Jeremiah and Julie Ballinger, Cherie and Dewayne Holliday, Shianna Ware, L.C. and Stormy Ware, Jacob and Brianna Ware, Carrie Johnson, and Allison and Reagan Blackwell; great grandchildren, Arianna, Matt Matt, Harper Taylor, Josiah, Jaylen and Braylee Parker, Mckenzie Mims, Emery and Arlen Ballinger, Kyson and Krenlee Ann Ballinger, Alanna, Hunter Ware, Raeleigh Kay, Lawson James, Alexiah King, Zion Reed, Mason, Maren, Daylon, Jansyn, Amara, Claysan, Wyatt, and Zaylee; numerous nieces, nephews, extended relatives, friends, and other children she raised like her own.

The Visitation will be Monday, January 13, 2025, from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM at First United Pentecostal Church of Hurley. The Funeral Service will be Tuesday, January 14, 2025 beginning at 11:00 AM in the church sanctuary with Bro. Lamar Ware, Bro. Randy Jourdan, Bro. Greg Hicks, and Bro. Jerry Hamilton officiating. Burial will follow in Buckley Family Cemetery. Pallbearers include Jacob Ware, Jeremiah Ballinger, Matthew Taylor, L.C. Ware, Jared Ballinger, Tyler Mims, and PJ Parker. Honorary Pallbearers include Matt Matt Taylor, and Josiah Parker.
