Flashes fall to Riverfield in close game
St. Aloysius narrowly lost to Riverfield Academy 24-22 in a hard-fought game, despite a strong second-half comeback. The Flashes are now 0-4 this season and will seek their first victory against Central Hinds next week.
VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) —
St. Aloysius came within one big play of securing its first victory of the season Friday night, but the Flashes fell just short in a 24-22 loss to Riverfield Academy.
The loss dropped St. Al to 0-4 on the season, but the Flashes showed signs of progress with a second-half comeback that nearly erased a 16-point deficit.
St. Al trailed 10-0 at halftime before Riverfield found the end zone again early in the third quarter to extend its lead to 16-0.
The Flashes finally broke through late in the third quarter when Keller Bradley recovered a fumble and returned it for a touchdown. Walt Andrews caught the ensuing 2-point conversion to cut the deficit to 16-8.
Riverfield responded with another touchdown and converted a 2-point attempt to take a 24-8 lead.
St. Al refused to go away.
Late in the game, quarterback Grant Gattle connected with Bradley for two touchdown passes of more than 50 yards each. Andrews caught another 2-point conversion following one of the scores, but the Flashes were unable to convert their final 2-point attempt that would have tied the game.
Gattle finished 15-of-35 passing for 229 yards and two touchdowns.
Bradley put together a big night on both sides of the ball, finishing with six receptions for 153 yards and two receiving touchdowns. He also scored a defensive touchdown on his fumble recovery.
Andrews caught six passes for 61 yards and hauled in two successful 2-point conversions.
St. Aloysius will continue its search for its first win when the Flashes travel to face Central Hinds next Friday.
