VHS fell short 34-24 against Ridgeland
Vicksburg High School staged a second-half comeback but ultimately lost 34-24 to Ridgeland. The Gators scored 24 points after trailing 27-0 at halftime, dropping their record to 0-3 this season.
A second-half comeback put Vicksburg High School back in the game Friday night, but the Gators ultimately fell short in a 34-24 loss to Ridgeland.
Vicksburg trailed 27-0 at halftime before scoring 24 points in the second half to make it a competitive game. The loss dropped the Gators to 0-3 on the season.
VHS had some bright moments defensively early in the contest, including a big open-field tackle by Dru Gleese that prevented Ridgeland from breaking loose for a bigger gain.
The Gators’ offense came alive in the third quarter. Nick Carson capped a 79-yard drive with a 24-yard touchdown run to cut Ridgeland’s lead to 27-6.
Vicksburg’s defense then gave the offense another opportunity when the Gators recovered a fumble at the Ridgeland 36-yard line.
A few plays later, quarterback TJ Selvy fired a 25-yard touchdown pass into triple coverage to Jaquez Jones, who came down with the ball for the score. The touchdown pulled VHS within 27-12.
Ridgeland quickly responded, however, as Gorden returned the ensuing kickoff 84 yards for a touchdown to extend the lead to 34-12.
The Gators refused to go away.
Rico Thomas broke free for a 35-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit to 34-18.
Vicksburg then made another big play on special teams. After the Gators blocked a Ridgeland punt, Jaylen Butler scooped up the loose ball and returned it for a touchdown, bringing VHS within 10 points at 34-24.
The comeback came too late, however, as time eventually ran out on Vicksburg’s rally.
The Gators will host crosstown rival Warren Central next week in the Red Carpet Bowl.
