Gators fell short 14-6 to Natchez on Friday

Vicksburg High School fell short on Friday in a 14-6 loss to Natchez.

The game started the game with a good kick return from Jermaine Gaines. The Gators had trouble getting the offense going and were forced to punt the ball.

The Gator defense responded well as Stephen Anderson and and Cameron Nailor both made big stops. The Bulldogs eventually turned the ball over on downs after Vicksburg’s Dennis Battle grabbed the necessary tackle.

Late in the first quarter, Ced Blackmore came in with some tough running but VHS couldn’t make their way into the end zone. Anderson continued to make defensive stops as time expired with the score tied at zero.

As Natchez came out with a mixture of running and passing, the Bulldogs eventually scored an 8-yard touchdown run from the quarterback.

DeCorey Knight Jr. picked up a couple of first downs in the second quarter while Jacoby Smith and Blackmore added positive yards but the first half ended with VHS down 8-0.

The Gators came out in the second half with confidence as Jadarius Henderson laid a lick on the running back for a negative 10 yards. On the next play, Thomas Hardimon and Anderson sacked the quarterback which put Natchez in a 3rd and 27 situation. A long pass on the next play gave the Bulldogs the first down and they would score just a couple of plays later later from a pass to take the 14-0 lead.

As time drained quickly in the third quarter, Natchez stripped the ball from VHS on their 30-yard line as they gained possession heading into the fourth. The Gators didn’t allow Natchez to score with 9:52 left in the game.

The Gators would eventually get on the board with 1:19 left to play when Jamikal Maxey hit Marquis Knight on a 9-yard touchdown pass that put the game at 14-6 after a failed extra point. 

VHS wouldn’t score again as they took the loss. 

Coming into the game, Natchez was averaging 55 points per game but was held to 14 against the Gators. VHS will host Terry next Friday.
