Gators took down the defending state champions in a 64-54 win
Vicksburg High School boys’ basketball team defeated the defending state champions Northwest Rankin 64-54.
The Cougars quickly went up 5-0 in the first quarter but shots from Kam Bailey and Kealon Bass would eventually tie the game. Mincer Minor IV drove in a hard layup and Mikey Johnson popped a nice 3-pointer close to the buzzer as VHS went up 12-7.
Bass knocked down a 3-pointer to start the second quarter but the Gators would eventually have trouble at the free throw line. Shots from Bailey, Lazaveon Sylvester and Tyler Henderson kept VHS ahead as they went into halftime with a 25-23 lead.
Coming out of halftime, Henderson stepped up on defense and forced multiple turnovers that resulted in points. The Gators then grabbed a double digit lead after a clutch 3-pointer from Jaylin Jackson and a long 3-pointer at the buzzer by Davian Williams.
The fourth quarter consisted of a hard fought battle between VHS and NWR but Gators finished out on top as Bailey ended the night with 17 points.
Henderson and Willams both scored 10 points on the night while Johnson brought in eight. Jackson and Bass both had six points while Sylvester pitched in four and Minor scored three.
Missy Gators:
The Missy Gators took a 69-33 loss as Kierra James led with 15 points. Terri Boyd scored seven points and Cynia Johnson added five. Rodrianna Hall put up four.
VHS will travel to Natchez on Thursday.
