VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — Cynia Johnson and Zion Harvey became a dominant duo for the Vicksburg High School girls’ basketball team this season, finishing as the top two scorers in Warren County under head coach Troy Stewart.

Harvey and Johnson have been named VDN’s 2024-25 Girls’ Basketball Co-Players of the Year.

Harvey made an immediate impact after missing her junior year due to transfer rules. Despite the setback, she shined in her return and cemented herself as one of the county’s top athletes.

In her final season wearing green and white, Harvey averaged 27 points, six assists, and four rebounds per game.

“I feel like I had a great season, and I accomplished everything but winning a championship. But I still feel that everything went well,” Harvey said.

Determined to make up for lost time and impress college scouts, she intensified her training.

“I trained that entire year, so that helped me become more explosive, and I became better at my free throws,” she said.

Harvey often faced double teams, but few could stop her. She delivered multiple 30-point performances, including a career-high 37 points in a 61-54 win over Columbus High School. She also helped VHS defeat Neshoba Central twice.

When people doubted her ability to return at a high level, Harvey proved them wrong.

“It feels good to earn this award and to be recognized for my accomplishments, so I’m grateful,” she said.

Harvey was also named the District Offensive Player of the Year.

Johnson ensured her name would be remembered after an outstanding senior season, excelling on both offense and defense while leading her team to the playoffs.

This time last year, Johnson averaged 10 points and nine rebounds per game. This season, she doubled her numbers, averaging 24 points and 18 rebounds per game—the only player in the area to average a double-double.

“I tried to keep a good attitude this year, but I had the mindset that I’m a senior, so it was time for me to step up,” Johnson said.

A varsity player since eighth grade, she opened her senior campaign with a 19-point performance in a win over South Pike.

“I’ve come a long way since eighth grade, from not producing to being a key player for my team,” she said.

Johnson’s defensive prowess earned her District Defensive Player of the Year honors. Coming from a basketball family, she lived up to her name and secured a well-deserved spot among the county’s best.

“I’m honored and blessed to be named Co-Player of the Year, and I’m now ready to play at the next level,” she said.

Looking Ahead

Harvey and Johnson both started their basketball journeys at the Vicksburg YMCA. Years later, they led VHS to an 18-13 season and a second-round playoff appearance.

Although their high school careers have ended, it won’t be the last time fans see them together—both will play at Holmes Community College next season.
