Hinds CC defeated Southwest Mississippi Community College in overtime

RAYMOND, Miss. – The Hinds Community College Football team picked a big 34-28 win over Southwest Mississippi Community College in overtime on Thursday evening inside Joe Renfroe Stadium. With the win, the Eagles improved to 3-3 overall and 3-1 in MACCC South Division play.
Both teams went three and out in their opening possessions, but Hinds got on the board first on their second possession when Ja’Marian Johnson found the end zone from two yards out as the Eagles took the seven-point lead with 9:46 remaining in the first quarter.
On the ensuing possession, the visitors capped off a 71-yard touchdown drive to even the contest up at 7 with 5:15 left in the first quarter. At the end of the first frame, the Eagles and Bears were all knotted up at 7-7.
The Eagles drove down the field as Jayden Reed punched it across the goal line for the Eagles from one yard out to take the 14-7 lead with 10:53 left until the halftime break. After some good defensive stands by both teams, the Eagles completed a 55-yard touchdown drive as Ja’Marian Johnsongrabbed his second touchdown of the night to bring the score to 21-7.
Devarrick Woods forced a fumble 41 seconds later, and Branden Jennings picked the ball up and took it to the house as the Eagles led 28-7 at halftime.
Southwest had the ball coming out of the halftime break, but K’Swaya Moffett Jr.recovered a fumble as the Eagles had all the momentum. After the Eagles stalled on the next possession, the Bears scored a touchdown to cut the lead to 28-14.
The Bears defense kept the Eagles in check for the remainder of the third quarter as Southwest added another touchdown to narrow the lead to seven points at the end of the third quarter.
Both defenses played well in the fourth quarter, but Southwest found a way to score a touchdown with 16 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 28. The Eagles came out on the next series and took a knee to send the game to overtime.
Hinds won the toss in overtime and elected to play defense, so Southwest had the ball at the 25-yard line. The Bears missed a 42-yard field goal that would have given them the lead for the first time tonight, but Boatman missed wide left.
After some costly penalties, Roman Mulascored the game-winning touchdown on a keeper to the right side as the Eagles sealed the 34-28 victory over the Bears.
Jayden Reed was the offensive player of the game, with 29 rushes for 129 yards and one touchdown. Tyrell Pollard led the receiving corps with five receptions for 53 yards. As a team, Hinds had 260 rushing yards and 85 passing yards to give the Eagles 345 yards of total offense.
Branden Jennings led the defense with nine total tackles, two TFL, and one fumble recovery for a touchdown. Vernorrius Chaneyalso had two TFL and three pass breakups in the win. Aven Kelley led the Eagles with two sacks and 2.5 TFL.
Tanner Hollingsworth had four punts for 136 yards, while Cullen Cox totaled three punts for 101 yards. Additionally, Hollingsworth was 4-for-4 on PAT’s and 0-1 on Field Goals tonight.
The Eagles will return to action on Thursday, October 19 against Itawamba CC Indians for Homecoming at Joe Renfroe Stadium. Kickoff is slated to begin at 7:00 PM.
