INDIANOLA, Miss. – Mayor Ken Featherstone expressed his sorrow to Magnolia Tribune earlier this week following a shooting in Indianola on Sunday morning.

The incident occurred on Church Street near the Sunflower County Courthouse. Shots rang out just after midnight, striking a large crowd gathered near a nightclub.

Indianola Police Chief Ron Sampson reported that gunfire killed three 19-year-old males, Areon Butler, Cameron Lee Butts, and Marquette Baites, and injured 13 others either directly or by ricochet bullets.

Mayor Featherstone stated that responders transported several severely injured individuals to a hospital in Jackson.

“The case is under investigation,” the Mayor said. “The Mississippi Bureau of Investigations is assisting our local police department. We have made no arrests.”

Magnolia Tribune confirmed MBI’s assistance through the Department of Public Safety. Indianola Mayor Featherstone mentioned that investigators have not yet established a motive for the shooting.

“Please keep the families of the deceased and injured in your prayers,” the Mayor said. “The City of Indianola plans to hold a candlelight vigil to honor those who were killed and injured.”
