JACKSON, MS. – Yesterday WLBT reported the tire factory that caught fire a few weeks ago has possibly rekindled. After a nearly week long effort to extinguish the blaze that clouded the air over Jackson, the Jackson Fire Department believed they had successfully put out the fire.

According to WLBT, their crews spotted the fire around 2:50 p.m. Sunday, September 1, at the Mississippi Tire Recycling building, located near East McDowell Road and Parcel Drive. Shortly after their crew were on scene, five Jackson Fire Department trucks arrived to extinguish the fire.

Assistant Fire Chief Patrick Armon told WLBT that the department is working to confirm if the fire rekindled.

It is still unclear as to the original cause of the initial blaze. The Clarion Ledger reported huge plumes of black smoke and occasional bursts of fire could be seen shooting out. Crews with the Jackson Fire Department and the Jackson Police Department had blocked off the entrance to Parcel Drive off of East McDowell Road.

The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality and the Environmental Protection Agency also responded to the fire. MDEQ contained the oil released from this type of fire into a water source that flows into the Pearl River, and now they’re working to remove it. An EPA representative said there is no health threat.
