John Henry Tyler, Jr: 1958-2025

VICKSBURG, Miss. — John Henry Tyler, Jr., a Vicksburg native, passed away on Friday March 21 in Buffalo, NY following a lengthy illness. He was 67.

W. H. Jefferson Funeral Home has been an integral part Vicksburg since 1894. Founded by William Henry and Lucy Jefferson, the first African American funeral director in the state of Mississippi. Grandmother Lucy Jefferson was a leader in education. 

They are honored on the New Beginnings and Lasting Legacies mural on the Vicksburg Riverfront Murals.

W. H. Jefferson Funeral Home has been in the same location for over a half century. The business is co-owed today by family members James E. Jefferson, Jr., and his uncle, Robert. Sr.
