Vicksburg, MS-After experiencing a memorable season in 2023, two Porter’s Chapel Academy seniors are prepared to run it back again as week 1 is quickly approaching. Jase Jung and Hunter Simms will play heavy roles for the Eagles this year.

Jung:

Jung was Warren County’s lead rusher in the 2023 season when the Eagles went 12-1. Now that he’s a senior, Jase is all pumped up about 2024 and what it has to offer.

“We made it to semifinals last year but we’re aiming for state this year especially since we’re a run-heavy football team,” Jung said.

Jung was a complete animal on the field last year, both offensively and defensively. His excellent running ability and aggressiveness earned him 1,974 rushing yards, 25 rushing touchdowns, two receiving touchdowns, 2,253 all-purpose yards, 58 total tackles, and two interceptions

The way Jung carried his team in the previous years is mind-blowing, but he mentioned that it puts plenty of pressure on him to remain the best.

“My coaches always tell me that all eyes will be on me so that definitely adds pressure but I’m well prepared for anything,” he added.

Simms:

As a junior in 2023, Simms emerged as PCA’s lead tackler. He managed to rack up 76 tackles, six tackles for loss, and one sack as the Eagles managed to stop six opponents from scoring in double digits.

Last year is now in the past for Simms as he is ready for 2024.

“We’re taking it to state this year and I’m feeling excited about it,” Simms said.

The star middle linebacker will also be a huge part of the offense as he will be playing guard and tight end. Although winning is a big part of the game, Simms mentioned that he has goals of his own that he would like to reach in 2024.

“I want to earn a football scholarship and I know I have the talent to achieve that,” he added.

Simms and Jung both received All-County, All-District, and All-MAIS honors in 2023 and they will be led by Head Coach Blake Purvis.
