VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — The Junior Auxiliary of Vicksburg is seeking the community’s help in collecting 130 blankets to be included in sensory kits for every first responder vehicle in Warren County.

The initiative is in collaboration with the Hussman Institute for Autism, the Vicksburg Police Department, the Warren County Sheriff’s Office, Vicksburg Fire and Rescue, and Warren County Fire and Rescue. The goal is to equip all 130 first responder vehicles with sensory kits designed to reduce stress and overstimulation during emergency situations — particularly for neurodiverse individuals with sensory sensitivities.

The blankets, which will be included in each kit, will accompany other essential calming tools.

Each kit typically includes items such as noise-canceling headphones to reduce auditory stimuli; sunglasses to minimize visual overstimulation; fidget tools and stress-relief items to provide calming tactile input; communication aids — such as letter boards and visual prompts — to facilitate nonverbal interaction; and comfort objects like plush toys to offer emotional support.

Community members can contribute in one of three ways:

  • Donate directly via Venmo to @JuniorAuxiliaryVicksburg-Vicks. Include “blanket donation drive” in the memo.
  • Drop off new blankets at community collection sites by June 1:
    • Central Fire Station, 1630 Walnut St., Vicksburg, MS 39180
    • Crossway Church, 1825 U.S. 61 South, Vicksburg, MS 39180 (Office hours: 8 a.m.–noon and 1–4:30 p.m.)
Blankets may also be given directly to Junior Auxiliary members at any time for kit replenishment.
  • Purchase from the Amazon Wish List provided by Junior Auxiliary.

“The Vicksburg Fire Department is honored to serve as a vital drop-off site for the Blanket Donation Drive, a meaningful initiative in partnership with the Junior Auxiliary,” said Vicksburg Fire Chief Derrick Stamps. “Providing a soft, comforting blanket or a soothing item to children during challenging moments not only brings them warmth and reassurance but also plays a crucial role in building trust. This connection allows our dedicated first responders to carry out their essential duties with compassion and effectiveness. Together, we are making a profound difference in the lives of those we serve in our community.”
