Kid’s Day Out at Julia’s Garden July 18

VICKSBURG, Miss. – The Mississippi Community Housing Development is hosting a Kid’s Day Out on July 18 at Julia’s Memorial Community Garden in Vicksburg from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
The garden, located located on East Street near its intersection with Cherry Street, is in honor of Charlie Gholson’s daughter, Julia who lost her battle to cancer. After her passing, the house Julia lived in sat vacant for a number of years. Gholson cleared the land, and when he heard about Angela Turner’s project to bring a community garden to Vicksburg, he donated the land where Julia’s house once sat for the effort.
“It’s a place to teach people how to grow their own food and to introduce children to gardening,” explained Turner. “One of the best days was when a child who visited a few weeks earlier came by and saw the seedling that had grown into a plant. The child could not believe that large plant grew there.” Turner explained the child was certain “Food comes from the store!”
The event is free and open to the public.
MS CHDO has serviced the community since 2020 and has obtained over $800k in grants funds. They have provided funds to low income and under-serviced homeowners throughout Mississippi and Louisiana. The funds are used for repairs and maintenance to their homes.
The Julia’s Garden group meets four times a year. For more information, call 601-456-1499.
