River City Rescue Mission to Host Fish Fry July 27
VICKSBURG, Miss. – The River City Rescue Mission will host a Fish Fry July 27 at 11:30 a.m.
The plates are a $10 donation each, and include fish and two sides. The proceeds will go to help the underprivileged men the Mission serve get IDs, Birth Certificates, and Social Security Cards.
The Rescue Mission is a non-profit, Christian based, drug and alcohol rehabilitation program. They also offer temporary housing for men who need assistance in recovery and aim to offer them the tools they need to succeed. In addition to offering shelter and healing, the Mission uses an outreach program to provide food to the hungry. They assist families with basic needs like clothing and household essentials.
The Mission was started several years ago by Doug Upchurch, who saw the need in Vicksburg to help people transition from homelessness to becoming a productive part of society. Homeless people often don’t have access to showers or clean clothes and that makes interviewing for a job difficult. As the effort and the size of the mission grew it also became a place for people who had been a part of the penal system. They often have no family support and need a place to grow into the workforce.
The Mission is located at 3705 Washington Street. The thrift store hours are from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and the Rescue Mission is open 24/7. If you or someone you know may be in need of their assistance, you can call their number at 601-636-6602.
