Old River bridge open for pedestrians July 3

VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — The old Vicksburg bridge will open for pedestrian traffic ahead of the Vicksburg Fourth of July Celebration this Thursday, July 3, from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The bridge will be open to pedestrians, but pets will not be allowed for this event.

Now only a railroad bridge, the old Mississippi River bridge was closed to motor vehicle traffic in 1998. Since then, the bridge’s narrow two-lane road opens for pedestrian traffic only on special occasions, including Supper on the ‘Sip, United Way of West Central Mississippi largest annual fundraiser.

The bridge was built by the Vicksburg Bridge & Terminal Co. and opened May 1, 1930. The bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

This event is free and open to the public.
