One In Custody in Murder of Star Basketball Player Korey Sims Jr.

VICKSBURG, Miss. – One person is in custody in the murder of Korey Sims, Jr. and the shooting of three others on Sunday night.

Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace says Sheriff’s Department Investigators have made an arrest in the murder of former St Al. basketball star Korey Sims, Jr. and the shooting of three other 18-year-olds.

Tavon Cain, 18, of Vicksburg, is in custody. He was arraigned today in front of Judge Marcy Southerland and charged with First Degree Murder and three counts of Aggravated Assault. No bond has been set at this time.

According to reports, the shooting occurred over Cain’s stolen phone. Cain used the the iPhone tracker which led him to Abraham Drive where he used an AR style weapon in the shooting.

“It was an AR capable of shooting a .223,” said Stacey Rollison, an investigator in the case.

On Sunday night just after 9:30 four people youths, two from Vicksburg and two from Fayette, were in the backyard of a residence at 118 Abraham Drive just outside the city limits. According to neighbors, someone walked up from the wooded area to the North and shot at the four youth in the back yard. Sims Jr. was struck in the head and died on the scene. One of the youths was struck in the upper chest area, one in the foot, and another in the leg.
