VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — Faculty, staff, and students gathered to celebrate the retirement of Redwood Elementary Principal Buddy Wooten, marking the end of a 27-year career in the Vicksburg-Warren School District.

Wooten’s career in education began at Warren Central Junior High School, where he taught physical education and health while coaching football and track for three years. He then transitioned to Warren Central High School, where he spent nine years teaching biology and physical science, continuing his coaching roles.

He later served as an assistant principal at Warren Central High for five years before being appointed principal of Redwood Elementary in 2016.

For the past decade, Wooten has been credited with fostering a school culture rooted in leadership, integrity, and a deep commitment to students. Colleagues said his impact at Redwood will not be forgotten.

“From the moment you walk through the doors, you can feel the love and dedication Mr. Wooten poured into this school,” one staff member said.

Wooten will be remembered by the Redwood community not only as a leader but also as a mentor, coach, and role model. His absence will be deeply felt across the district.

The Vicksburg-Warren School District has not announced Wooten’s replacement at this time.
