JACKSON, Miss. (VDN) — Governor Tate Reeves has announced a special session of the Mississippi Legislature, scheduled to begin Wednesday, May 28, 2025, at 11 a.m.

In a statement released Tuesday, Reeves emphasized the need to finalize the state’s budget after lawmakers failed to do so during the regular legislative session.

“I’m calling a special session to begin tomorrow at 11 a.m.,” said Reeves. “Since it became apparent that a budget would not be passed during this year’s regular session, I’ve been clear that we should prioritize funding core government functions and keeping spending under control.

“That’s what the $7.135 billion proposed budget does. It funds the agencies and programs government needs to operate, while staying true to our conservative principles.

“This shouldn’t be a long special session! Working together with our partners in the legislature, I’m confident that we can get this done quickly on behalf of Mississippians.

“Looking forward to a good special session!”

The governor’s call focuses on adopting a general appropriations bill that would keep state agencies funded and government operations running smoothly. Reeves’ proposed $7.135 billion budget is expected to be the primary item of discussion during the session.
