VHS softball picks up two wins in Cancer Strikeout Tournament
VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — The Vicksburg High School softball team earned two wins in its annual Cancer Strikeout Tournament, defeating Yazoo City 9-5 and Callaway 14-0.
In Game 1, VHS jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning after RBIs from Taylor Howard and Jakayla Hampton. Hampton also added a steal of home before the inning ended. Yazoo City answered with five runs in the second inning, capitalizing on walks to take the lead.
The Missy Gators regained control as Kaci Coleman and Howard delivered RBIs. Shandrea Lockridge added a steal of home, helping shift momentum back to VHS. Three walks in the third inning helped seal the 9-5 victory.
Dayana Gonzalez recorded a double in the win. Coleman and Madisyn Kimble combined to allow zero hits, with Coleman also striking out one batter.
In Game 2, VHS took an early 4-0 lead in the first inning. Morgan Atkinson hit a ground ball that brought in two runs, while Kimble and Coleman both scored on wild pitches.
The Missy Gators added five more runs in the second inning, taking advantage of walks and wild pitches. In the third inning, Howard, Gonzalez and Lockridge each recorded RBIs to extend the lead. Harmony Harris and Karma Wilson both added hits in the game.
Coleman tossed a no-hitter in Game 2, striking out five batters.
Proceeds from the tournament will benefit Eddie Graves of Vicksburg, who is battling stage 2 lung cancer.
“I want to thank y’all for supporting the cancer patients,” Graves said. “I also want to tell all the cancer patients to never give up and put your trust in the Lord.”
