Vicksburg High opens inaugural flag football season with 12-6 win over Gentry

VICKSBURG, Miss.(VDN)Vicksburg High School opened its inaugural flag football season with a 12-6 win over Gentry on Thursday night.

The Missy Gators improved to 1-0 after earning the road victory.

Vicksburg struck first when Dallas West returned a punt 35 yards for a touchdown, giving VHS a 6-0 lead at halftime.

Gentry tied the game at 6-6 in the second half, but the Missy Gators responded late. Jordan Powell scored the game-winning touchdown on a 15-yard reception from Aaliyah Mims.

Defensively, Jakeyla Curry was all over the field and racked up multiple flag pulls. Antonia Carter, Kamiya Moore and Jordan Harris also turned in strong performances on defense. On offense, Jada Erwin made several key receptions.

The victory also marked the first win under head coach LaShanda Williams.
