Gewel Porter, a Vicksburg native, has been named captain of the Cane Ridge High School cheerleading team in Antioch, Tennessee, as she prepares for her senior year.

Porter earned the honor of captain last month in June and will lead the Ravens cheer squad during the upcoming school year.

“I was excited and overwhelmed when I found out,” Porter said. “I’m just happy that I finally get to lead.”

Porter has been involved in cheerleading since the age of 5, beginning her journey with the Vicksburg Packers in her hometown.

Throughout her cheer career, Porter has continued to grow as a leader and now looks forward to guiding her teammates in her new role as captain.

After graduating high school, Porter plans to attend Tennessee State University, where she hopes to continue cheering while pursuing a degree in nursing.
