Vicksburg troopers top National LawFit Challenge

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. (VDN) — Two Vicksburg men became National Champions after competing in the 23rd annual National LawFit Challenge. Wayne Smith and Michael Brown both achieved a great goal at the event that drew 89 members of law enforcement to compete.

The 3-day event was held in Southaven, Mississippi, where Brown and Smith were both on the same 4-man team. They both became national champions on the 4-man team as they finished in first place.
Smith, 55 years old, a 25-year veteran with the Mississippi Highway Patrol, came in second place overall in the individual, third in the stretch, third in sit-ups, third in the pull-ups, and second in the 2-man team.

For Smith, this event was huge due to him being the second-oldest competitor at the event. Much younger members of law enforcement competed, but Smith still managed to finish with impressive numbers.
“It was a great feeling, and I knew we had to be prepared for a battle,” Smith said. “We pushed each other and kept improving, but we had great teams come from all over, and we very much improved on our weaknesses.”
Brown, a 43-year-old, 14-year veteran with the Mississippi Highway Patrol, also dominated at the event, as he was recognized for some achievements. He earned the Rookie of the Year Award, third overall in bench press, and third overall in the 2-man team.

“I was surprised because I don’t follow the numbers, and I was just focused on my individual participation for the team, but I’m still surprised that we got first place and to hear my name that many times,” Brown said. “It’s just a blessing.”
Most agencies send their absolute best, so Smith and Brown had their hands full when it came to competition. But through hard work and dedication, things worked out in their favor.
“I would like to thank God for giving me the strength and energy to compete with these young guys,” Smith added. “It’s a blessing to be able to compete and hold your own with the people coming from all over the nation, and it’s all about consistency,” Brown said.
This challenge was not only about fitness. It also gave many members a chance to fellowship with other officers from around the country. Anyone affiliated with law enforcement was eligible to compete, including sheriff’s deputies, police officers, correction officers, wildlife officers, and many more.
Now that the challenge is behind them, Smith and Brown are back to serving the citizens of Mississippi on our highways.
