Vicksburg YMCA to host Easter Sunrise Service

VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — For the past 76 years the YMCA has hosted an interdenominational Easter Sunrise Service for the greater community of Vicksburg. Held at the top of Fort Hill in the Vicksburg National Military Park, the service unites people of different faiths in celebration of our Lord and Savior’s resurrection. It is not designed to compete, but rather compliment other church efforts.
“The YMCA was founded in 1840 as a Christian organization,” YMCA Executive Director Phillip Doiron said. “Intentionally designed not to be linked to any one church, the underpinnings of our organization is rooted in the teachings of Jesus Christ. Locally, one of our most outward expressions of faith is the Easter Sunrise Service. Held continuously for 76 years, this service invites and unites the greater community of Vicksburg to celebrate our risen Lord.”
“What I love about the service is the variety of people who participate,” said Doiron. “You get runners who will park at one spot, run to the fort, attend, then run back. Others come dressed in their Sunday finest, and still others come like they are attending a picnic. All are gladly welcomed to this unique celebration.”
