VICKSBURG, Miss. by Don Hill (VDN) — A longtime bus driver for the Vicksburg Warren School District, Millie Queen, is asking for help from the community—not just through donations, but also through fellowship and a home-cooked meal.

Queen, her family and her church family set up shop Thursday on the corner of Clay Street and Mission 66 to offer plates of chicken and ribs, along with Easter baskets and other items, not only to raise money, but also for fellowship.

Queen, who has driven school buses for more than 20 years, was diagnosed with Stage 4 liver, colon and lung cancer. Without treatment, doctors have told her she may only have six months to live.

“It’s treatable, but not curable,” Queen said.

After experiencing light-headedness, Queen said she officially stopped driving the bus in March, just shy of retirement.

“It’s been hard,” she said. “I’ve always taken care of co-payments, medical bills—everything. But now my church family and relatives are the ones helping, holding sales to support me.”

She said it’s been difficult to ask for help after a lifetime of giving to others.

“I’ve always tried to be there for everyone else,” Queen said. “But this time—this is my time—and I need the help.”

Millie Queen and her family plan to set up again next weekend at the annual Spring Flea Market at the Old Court House Museum on April 26.
