Vikings’ season ended on Friday after a tough loss to Grenada
Warren Central’s football season came to an end on Friday night after a 23-10 loss to Grenada. The Vikings fought to the end but came up short as they played for the North State Title for the first time since 1994.
The Chargers got on the board on their opening drive after an 18-yard run. The Vikings wouldn’t stay down for long as Aden Greer took control of the ground game. Quarterback Nash Morgan connected with Mike Hall on a 13-yard pass and scrambled for some yards as well. With 28 seconds left in the first quarter, Jaylon “Red” Winters caught an 18-yard touchdown thrown by Morgan to tie the game at 7-7 after Jonah Artman’s extra point.
Ronnie Blossom made a key third down stop early in the second quarter while Roosevelt Harris Jr. forced a turnover after good coverage. A fumble by WC gave the Chargers the ball back with good field position as they settled on a field goal to go up 10-7 with 4:58 left in the half.
Late in the second quarter, Morgan completed another clutch pass to Hall and he threw another beauty to Winters to put the ball inside the 20-yard line. Artman nailed a 35-yard field goal to tie the game at 10-10 at halftime.
Landon Green earned a sack for WC coming out of halftime as they eventually got possession of the ball. The Vikings easily made their way downfield as Morgan threw completed passes to Hall and Winters. Penalty after penalty would be crucial against WC throughout the entire game.
Late in the third quarter, Qualls blasted the quarterback with a mean shoulder hit that forced a fumble and Blossom recovered. The Vikings fumbled on the next play which gave Grenada plenty of momentum.
More penalties were called in the fourth which resulted in one of WC’s players being ejected. The Chargers ended up taking the 17-10 lead after a 30-yard touchdown run. They got on the board one more time before the end of the game to take home the win and advance to the State Championship Game.
The Vikings ended their season with a 9-4 record and made it to North State for the first time in 30 years. Head Coach Josh Morgan addressed his team after the game.
“I wish I could take this pain away from y’all but we love each and every one of you,” Morgan said to his team.
