Ward 1 Alderman to host free Contractors Academy in partnership with Mississippi Development Authority

VICKSBURG, Miss.(VDN) — Ward 1 Alderman TJ Mayfield announced today that the Ward 1 office will host the upcoming Contractors Academy, presented in partnership with the Mississippi Development Authority’s Minority and Small Business Development Division. These spring 2026 sessions will provide local contractors, aspiring entrepreneurs, and small construction business owners with training and resources to help grow and sustain their businesses.

The Contractors Academy is designed to equip participants with practical knowledge and tools to navigate the construction industry successfully. Topics will include business planning, licensing and certification, access to capital, contracting opportunities, project management, and strategies for competing for public and private sector contracts.

“This academy is an important opportunity for local contractors and small business owners to gain the skills and knowledge needed to compete and grow,” said Alderman Mayfield. “By partnering with the Mississippi Development Authority, we are making sure our community has direct access to the resources and expertise that help businesses succeed. Vicksburg does not thrive without helping our small businesses.”

Representatives from the Mississippi Development Authority’s Minority and Small Business Development Division will lead sessions and guide available state resources, procurement processes, and certification programs designed to support minority-owned and small businesses. The program is open to current contractors, construction professionals, and individuals interested in starting a construction-related business.

The academy will take place every Tuesday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., beginning April 7, 2026, and continuing through June 2, 2026, at MCity Vicksburg at 1622 Washington Street. The Contractors Academy is free but interested participants but register by clicking the link.
