Corey Hicks earned first place in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing with an impressive time of 15.2 seconds. Teammate Derrijye Wince also captured gold, winning the high jump with a top clearance of 5 feet, 8 inches.

Both athletes are newcomers to track and field, making their achievements even more remarkable.

Head Coach Batty praised not only the individual champions, but the team as a whole.

“As a coach, I am so proud of these two guys as well as my whole team,” Batty said. “This was the first year my entire team was new to the sport, but we grew and improved drastically over the season.”

The season is not over yet for Warren Central. Hicks and Wince will be joined by teammate David “Gunner” Ferguson as they advance to the MHSAA Middle School State Track Meet on Monday in Pearl. The meet is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.

At the state competition, Hicks will compete in the 100-meter hurdles, while Wince will take part in both the discus throw and high jump. Ferguson will represent the team in the 3200-meter run.

With strong momentum and continued growth, Warren Central’s young track team looks to build on its success as it heads into state competition.
