Vicksburg, Miss.-Warren Central High School’s softball team grabbed their first win of the season against Loyd Star on Thursday. The Lady Vikes ended the night with an 8-7 victory. Tonight’s win went back and forth between the two teams where the final RBI from Mary Clell Allred secured victory.

“I told them that this is when everything counts,” WC Head Coach Brian Ellis said. “We had some mistakes but we had to let them know that it has to be a team effort in order for us to win.”

Both teams struggled to earn a hit until the third inning when WC got the bats hot. MK Ferguson and KeKe McKay popped things off with singles just before Maddy Pant hit the first RBI just shortly before Kennadi Williams hit a 2-run single to put the score at 3-0.

The Lady Vikes got to swinging successfully again in the fifth as Ferguson and Pant got on base. Williams hit another RBI to give WC the 4-0 lead.

The game seemed to be going in WC’s favor until the sixth inning. By the top of the inning, Pant had already struck out 11 batters but Loyd Star stepped up and hit two triples and a double that brought in a total of seven runs to take the lead. Eighth-grader KK Williamson then came in to pitch.

The Lady Vikes added one run in the sixth once Williamson singled which brought Anzley Keen home.

Down 7-5 at the start of the seventh, WC depended on the young pitcher to get the defense off the field. Williamson struck out the final two batters to keep the score at 7-5 as they went up to bat.

In the final inning, WC was strictly business as Pant and McKay both hit singles. Addi Mullen and Keen both smashed RBIs next to tie the game at 7-7. Williamson was then intentionally walked which set up Allred to bring home the win from a nice single as Mullen ran home.

Pant went 3 for 4 at the plate and she struck out 11 batters. McKay and Keen(1 RBI) both went 2 for 4 while Ferguson, Allred(1 RBI), Mullen(1 RBI), Williamson(1 RBI), and Williams(3 RBIs) all brought in one hit each. Williamson struck out two batters and allowed zero hits.
