VICKSBURG, Miss.(VDN) — Jonah Graham, a senior at Warren Central High School, recently completed a week of distinguished service as a Gubernatorial Page for Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves through the Office of the Governor of Mississippi.

Selected for this prestigious opportunity, Graham worked directly with the Governor and his executive staff, assisting with daily office operations and constituent services. Throughout the week, he observed the legislative process during active sessions, gaining first hand insight into how the executive branch collaborates with state lawmakers in the development and implementation of public policy.

As part of the program’s immersive experience, Graham attended meetings with state officials to learn about policy-making, Mississippi history, and the responsibilities of public leadership. He also developed and presented a mock bill before policymakers and legislators, who deliberated and voted on the proposal. This exercise provided him with practical experience in drafting legislation, public speaking, and understanding the complexities of the lawmaking process.

In addition, Graham spent an afternoon with the Justices of the Mississippi Supreme Court, where he studied the structure of the judicial branch and the historical development of Mississippi’s court system. This opportunity offered a comprehensive perspective on the balance of powers among the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of state government.

Graham was sponsored for the program by GovernorTate Reeves and members of the Governor’s Office staff. He also received local sponsorship and support from Warren County Youth Court Judge Marcie Southerland, Vicksburg Mayor Willis Thompson, and Vicksburg Alderman TJ Mayfield.

Reflecting on the experience, Graham stated, “This week was amazing learning how our government works and to see such a diverse group of individuals coming together in order to speak on behalf of the people of Mississippi. I have so much more respect for the work that all our elected officials do on a daily basis, whether it be at the local or state level.”

Jonah also shared his appreciation for his sponsors, stating, ” I am very thankful for those that  supported and sponsored me this week. It really means a lot to me to know that there are (grown) people that still have faith and believe in the young people of Mississippi. This is a moment that I will always remember, and it’s because of their willingness to give me a chance, I now feel one step closer to reaching my goals. This week was amazing.”

Jonah has been accepted and will attend the University of Mississippi in the fall, where he will pursue a degree in criminal justice on a pre-law track. The experience as a Gubernatorial Page has further strengthened his commitment to attending law school and pursuing an advanced career in the legal and political fields. Through direct exposure to the functions of state government and the judicial system, Graham gained valuable insight into public service, leadership, and the rule of law — experiences that will serve as a strong foundation for his future aspirations in law and public policy.

Jonah is currently a senior at WCHS where he is an active participant in the HHS academy program. Jonah is the son of Dr. Jon Christopher and Christina Graham of Vicksburg.
