WCJHS Advances to the Little Six Championship After Defeating VJHS

A late touchdown helped Warren Central Junior High School football team advance to the Little Six Championship after defeating Vicksburg Junior High 14-8 on Tuesday.

“We came back and fought but most importantly we didn’t give up,” WCJHS quarterback Cameron Zellous said. “We still have more work to do because we’re fighting for a championship.”

The Gators came out running the ball effectively with Antwun Chiplin and Rico Thomas. A big defensive stop by Zellous forced VJHS to punt. Both teams played great defense in the first quarter as the score remained tied at zero.

A bobbled snap gave the Gators the ball at the five-yard line. On the first play of the second quarter, Thomas hit Clyde Mazie on a short touchdown pass. Thomas also ran in the 2-point conversation to put VJHS ahead 8-0. WCJHS had some profitable plays in the second quarter including a 30-yard run by Jared Williams but they couldn’t find the end zone and trailed by eight at halftime.

In the second half, the Vikings switched to their passing game where Zellous connected with Doss Morgan on multiple occasions. Due to both team’s defensive efforts, the score remained 8-0 heading into the fourth quarter.

The game didn’t make a change until the final three minutes when a bobbled punt put WC on the 15-yard line. Two plays later Zellous ran the ball in for a touchdown and a 2-point conversion to tie the game at 8-8. On the next kickoff, the Gators fumbled and WC recovered with good field position. Zellous then threw a 35-yard touchdown to Jordan Younger that sealed the victory for WC.

The Vikings will now advance to the Little Six Championship under Head Coach Louis Green who led the team to an undefeated regular season.

“This was all because of the kids,” Coach Green said.

VJHS finished with a 4-2 record under Head Coach Larry Carter Jr.
