VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — Will Bates has officially signed a scholarship to compete in track and cross country at Meridian Community College, making his commitment official Friday morning. The Warren Central High School standout inked the agreement to continue both his athletic and academic career at the next level.

“This is an amazing opportunity that I’m truly blessed by the Lord to have,” Bates said. “I feel like God opened this door for me. It’s close to home, and Meridian is a beautiful college that fits me well.”

Bates enjoyed a strong and consistent career at Warren Central, competing in track under head coach Corey Wilson Sr. and in cross country under his father, head coach Chris Bates. His junior track season featured some of the best performances in the program’s recent history.

In the 3,200 meters, Bates placed second with a time of 11:33.79, the fastest mark recorded by a Warren Central runner in the event since 2001. He also posted a time of 5:09.87 in the 1,600 meters, the school’s best showing in that event since 2011.

Bates recently wrapped up his senior cross country season, highlighted by two notable performances in the 5K. He ran a 17:45 before setting a personal best of 17:35, finishing 12th overall in the state meet. The race marked an emotional milestone, as it surpassed the previous best time held by former teammate Matthew Brewer.

“I called him afterward, and he congratulated me,” Bates said. “To me, he’s still the best, even though he told me I was.”

Bates said his favorite memories at Warren Central came from the training that began six years ago, noting that both sports played a major role in keeping him focused and grounded.

The son of Chris and Melanie Bates, he plans to major in business or kinesiology at Meridian. Before concluding his signing day, Bates also credited Aiden Dickerson for encouraging him to join the team.

“I don’t know where my life would be if Aiden hadn’t invited me,” Bates said. “I’m thankful to God for putting him in my life.”
