Alderman sponsors adult literacy program
VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — City of Vicksburg Alderman T.J. Mayfield announced the creation of a new adult literacy program designed to expand educational access, strengthen workforce readiness, and support lifelong learning opportunities for Vicksburg residents. The program officially opens on December 15 and will be offered at no cost to participants. Applications can be picked up at the Vicksburg Warren Youth Development Center at 2020 Mission 66.
Developed in partnership with the Delta Council, this initiative reflects a commitment to improving adult education resources. The program will deliver instruction in reading, writing, and foundational skills that promote greater job readiness. This program is also a key component of D.R.E.A.M , Development and Rehabilitation through Education and Mentorship, an initiative focused primarily on supporting residents ages 18 to 25. D.R.E.A.M aims to enhance essential skills, provide guided mentorship, and create structured pathways for young adults seeking to improve their academic and career opportunities.
The literacy program will be led by Sh’Vante Wiggins, the City of Vicksburg’s Youth Services Coordinator, who will oversee curriculum development, enrollment, and community outreach. Under Wiggins’ leadership, the program will provide a supportive environment for adults seeking to advance their literacy and workforce skills.
Alderman Mayfield emphasized the importance of this investment in residents’ long-term success. “Literacy is the cornerstone of opportunity. By ensuring adults in our community have access to high-quality instruction at no cost, we are opening doors to better jobs and stronger family structures. I am grateful to the Delta Council and to Ms. Wiggins for their leadership and partnership in bringing this program to life.”
Additional details regarding class schedules, registration, and volunteer opportunities will be announced in the coming days.
