Vikings top Greenville to punch ticket to playoffs
VICKSBURG, Miss.(VDN) — The Warren Central High School boys basketball team clinched a playoff spot Tuesday night with a 64-54 win over Greenville High School. The victory helped the Vikings bounce back after falling to the Hornets a week earlier.
“This is what it’s about,” WC head coach Keith Williams said. “We’ve been working hard and at this point of the year, records don’t matter. They learned to trust one another, but most of all they have to trust God, and I give all the glory to him.”
Deric Gibbs and Nash Morgan turned in standout performances, scoring 22 and 20 points, respectively.
The Vikings came out hot in the first quarter as Morgan knocked down a 3-pointer and Gibbs added two early baskets. By halftime, Warren Central held a 30-28 lead after freshman Jordan Taylor beat the buzzer with a layup.
The first half featured several lead changes, but the Vikings maintained control after the break. Davon O’Neal buried a key 3-pointer in the third quarter, while Morgan and Micah Moore capitalized at the free-throw line.
Gibbs, Moore and Morgan heated up again in the fourth quarter as Warren Central pulled away. Moore finished with 10 points, and O’Neal added nine. Taylor and Jonas Green scored two points each, and Avery Williams contributed a free throw.
