Bond revoked for two Vicksburg murder suspects after new felony charges

VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — 

Bond has been revoked for two Vicksburg men charged with murder after they were accused of committing additional violent felonies while awaiting trial.

Judge Toni Terrett found probable cause Friday on new charges against Demetrius Cormier and Phillip Moore Jr. The two men are each now charged with nine counts of aggravated assault, one count of possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, and two counts of shooting into a occupied dwelling stemming from a shooting on Hayes Street.

According to testimony during the hearing, the Vicksburg Police Department responded to an apartment complex on Hayes Street after receiving reports of shots fired. Assistant District Attorney Liem Walker represented the state and called Vicksburg Police Investigator Robert Barfield as a witness.

Barfield testified that surveillance video showed Moore and Cormier going in and out of an apartment while both were armed during the incident. He said the nine aggravated assault charges were filed because bullets entered multiple occupied apartments, including units where children were present.

Barfield also testified that both men were later arrested at Motel 6. During Cormier’s arrest, he jumped from a second-floor balcony in an apparent attempt to avoid being taken into custody and sustained injuries.

Moore is represented by attorney Michael Winfield, while Cormier is represented by attorney Patrick Beasley. Both defense attorneys argued that investigators could not identify either man as firing a weapon and contended the aggravated assault charges were not supported.

Following the hearing, Terrett revoked the defendants’ bonds and ordered both men held in the Warren County Jail pending trial.

At the time of the June 30 incident, Moore and Cormier were free on bond in connection with the 2023 killing of Carleone Woodland. In that case, both men are charged with first-degree murder and three counts of aggravated assault.
