Judge reinstates $5 million bond for Vicksburg man accused of killing his girlfriend
A Vicksburg man accused of killing his girlfriend in June has had his $5 million bond reinstated by Judge James Chaney. The decision comes after arguments regarding the bond’s reasonableness and community safety concerns.

A $5 million bond has been reinstated for a Vicksburg man accused of shooting and killing his girlfriend in June.
Judge James Chaney reinstated the bond Friday for Jeremy Wright, who is accused of killing Clarinda Turpin.
Wright appeared in court Friday alongside his attorney, Andrew Williams, who filed a motion seeking a reasonable bond after County Court ordered Wright held without bond.
Williams argued that placing Wright on no-bond status was an abuse by County Court. He noted that Judge Marcie Southerland had said the decision was made to protect the community.
Assistant District Attorney Branan Southerland argued against the motion, telling the court that Wright shot Turpin at least five times while actively chasing her.
Southerland said Turpin fled to another vehicle, but Wright continued firing at the vehicle, which was occupied by two children.
Wright fled the scene following the shooting and was later captured. According to Southerland, Turpin identified Wright as the person who shot her before she died.
Wright was originally charged with first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated assault, shooting into an occupied vehicle and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. A grand jury did not indict Wright on the two aggravated assault charges.
Following Wright’s initial arrest, Judge Angela Carpenter set his bond at $5 million. Judge Southerland later placed Wright on no-bond status during another hearing.
On Friday, Chaney reinstated Wright’s original $5 million bond.
