Judge Vicki Barnes has passed away
Chancery Court Judge Vicki Barnes, who served over three decades in Mississippi’s Ninth Judicial District, has passed away. Barnes was a significant figure in Vicksburg, having also served as the city prosecutor and municipal court judge.

Chancery Court Judge Vicki Barnes, who spent more than three decades on the bench in Mississippi’s Ninth Judicial District, has died.
Barnes’ death was confirmed as she was seeking another term as chancery court judge. She had served on the bench since first being elected in 1994.
Barnes was the senior chancellor for the Ninth Judicial District, which covers Warren, Sharkey, Issaquena, Humphreys, Sunflower and Washington counties.
Barnes graduated from Tougaloo College before earning her law degree from the University of Mississippi School of Law. Before becoming a chancery court judge, she operated a solo law practice and spent four years as Vicksburg’s city prosecutor. She also served nine years as a municipal court judge.
Her service extended beyond the courtroom. Barnes became the first woman to serve as president of the Junius Ward Johnson Memorial YMCA Board of Directors and remained a member of the board.
Barnes’ family is in the thoughts and prayers of the community following her death.
