Punkies Dessert Lounge is taking its sweet treats on the road after announcing the purchase of a food trailer earlier this week. The expansion marks another step forward for the Vicksburg business as it looks to reach more customers throughout the community.
Owner Erin Lawson said the food trailer will serve as an addition to the dessert lounge rather than a replacement for its current location.
“It’s a food trailer for Punkies, an addition to Punkies and what we already got going,” Lawson said.
The trailer will offer many of the same desserts customers have come to enjoy at Punkies, including cupcakes, cheesecakes, cookies, banana pudding and other popular treats.
Lawson said the trailer will primarily be used for festivals and community events, with hopes of eventually expanding into private gatherings.
“We’re going to do it for events, festivals, and then hopefully in the future we could do private events like weddings, birthday parties, things like that,” Lawson said.
Before the trailer can officially hit the road, it must undergo an inspection by the health department. Lawson said she hopes to have everything completed sometime in November.
One event she hopes to attend with the trailer is Alcorn State University’s homecoming, along with other community gatherings.
The expansion comes as Punkies approaches its first anniversary. Lawson said the dessert lounge will officially celebrate one year in business Nov. 9, with hopes of hosting an anniversary celebration later in the month.
Despite the challenges that can come with operating a small business, Lawson said the support from Vicksburg residents has helped Punkies continue to grow.
“Business is going great. I have no complaints,” Lawson said. “The community has supported Punkies 100% in anything that Punkies wants to do to support the community.”
Along with its desserts, Punkies continues to give back through its Classroom Rewards Program, which allows community members to sponsor classrooms throughout Vicksburg.
Through the program, sponsors provide free cupcake cards that teachers can distribute to students as rewards for good behavior and other accomplishments.
Lawson said individuals interested in sponsoring a classroom can visit Punkies in person or go online to punkies.org.
Customers can also purchase merchandise, including shirts, sweatshirts and hoodies. The dessert lounge also offers ice cream from The Scoop and lemonade from Metro Squeeze.
Punkies is open Wednesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. The business offers $2 cupcakes on Wednesdays and $6 cheesecakes on Saturdays.
As Punkies prepares to celebrate its first anniversary and expand its reach through the new trailer, Lawson hopes residents will continue supporting the business.
“They need to come to Punkies, get them a cupcake, cheesecake, whatever their heart may desire, dessert-wise, because it’s here,” Lawson said.
