At this place: United States Post Office and Court House building
VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — The United States Post Office and Court House Building located at 820 Crawford Street was designed by architect Claude H Lindsley.
Construction of the building began in 1935 and was completed in 1937. It served as Vicksburg’s Post Office for many years, in addition to the Federal Court House for the Southern District of Mississippi. Other government agencies such as the Weather Bureau, US Customs, and US District Engineers also had space in the building.
The five story structure is a stuccoed, Classical Revival style office building that faces North and features elaborate entablatures, large columns, and three sets of double bronze doors recessed behind large archways. It is one of the contributing structures in the Uptown Vicksburg Historical District listed on the US National Register of Historic Places in 1993.
The Old Court House Museum has an amazing collection of old photos taken in the Vicksburg and Warren county area. If you are ever interested in getting an old photo printed for your home or business, contact the Old Courthouse Museum and they can make it happen.
Starting in 2022, Chris Bolm began to take images from the Old Court House Museum‘s photo collections and pinpoint their current locations and replicate the shot. Bolm named the series “Then and Now.”
