VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — Brandon Harper of Vicksburg has been sentenced to 20 years in prison, with 10 years suspended, after pleading guilty to possession of a controlled substance stemming from a 2023 drug bust.

Judge Toni Terrett handed down the sentence, requiring Harper to serve 10 years. Assistant District Attorney Branan Southerland represented the state and agreed to drop Harper’s habitual offender status in exchange for the guilty plea. Southerland initially recommended a 15-year sentence, while Harper’s attorney, Daniel Edney, requested placement in drug court instead of prison time.

Harper was arrested on Sept. 6, 2023, following the execution of a search warrant at 1402 Division Street. The warrant was part of a joint investigation conducted by the Warren County Sheriff’s Office and the Vicksburg Police Department.

Southerland mentioned to the court that Harper had a bag of cocaine in his hand when officers entered the residence. He was charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute and three counts of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.

After sentencing, Harper was taken into custody by the Warren County Sheriff’s Office and will be transferred to the Mississippi Department of Corrections to serve his sentence for possession of controlled substance.
