Community leaders offer encouragement to Vicksburg’s federal workforce

VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — Locally elected officials are offering words of encouragement to Vicksburg’s federal workforce as concerns grow over job security following recent efforts to tighten federal spending.
Vicksburg is home to several federal entities, including the Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), the Mississippi Valley Division, the Vicksburg District, AmeriCorps, and the Vicksburg National Military Park. These organizations are integral to the community, providing employment and contributing significantly to the local economy.
Vicksburg has one of the largest concentrations of federal employees in the nation. They work, shop, invest, live in the area, and play a vital role in its economic stability.
The Vicksburg Daily News reached out to local elected officials for their thoughts on the impact of federal spending cuts on the area’s federal workforce.
County Supervisor Kelle Barfield
Warren County Board of Supervisors President Kelle Barfield said the situation is a reminder of how federal policies affect individuals at the local level.
“This situation is a painful reminder that government policy and action at every level hit home to individual Americans somewhere,” Barfield said. “In this case, it’s our home, where good employees devoted to public service by working in federal government are personally impacted. My prayers are with them and their families as they deal with this emotional and financial trauma.”
Mayor George Flaggs
Vicksburg Mayor George Flaggs highlighted the importance of the federal workforce to the city’s economic and social fabric.
“Vicksburg is fortunate to have a diverse workforce that keeps our community strong, and our federal employees play a vital role in that success,” Flaggs said.
“ERDC conducts cutting-edge research that drives innovation and national security advancements. The Mississippi Valley Division and Vicksburg District lead critical water management and infrastructure projects that have far-reaching impacts. AmeriCorps members dedicate themselves to service, strengthening our neighborhoods and supporting education. Meanwhile, the National Park Service preserves our rich history and natural beauty, enhancing tourism and learning opportunities.”
“As our federal workforce faces uncertainty with recent changes, we express our continued support and appreciation for their dedication,” he said. “Their expertise, service, and resilience are invaluable to Vicksburg’s success, and we stand with them in recognizing the vital role they play in our community. We remain committed to advocating for and supporting them in any way we can.”
