VICKSBURG, Miss.(VDN) — Calbert “Calbo” Cosby has been sentenced to life in prison for the 2024 murder of Devonte Gary at AB Food Mart.

Judge James Chaney handed down the sentence Friday morning, just weeks after a jury found Cosby guilty of the killing. Cosby also received a 15-year sentence for a drive-by shooting charge connected to the case.

Assistant District Attorney Michael Warren represented the state and was assisted by Assistant District Attorney Branan Southerland.

During last month’s trial, prosecutors argued that Cosby was the gunman in a vehicle that opened fire, killing Gary. The shooting was captured on video and presented as evidence in court.

The driver of the vehicle and co-defendant, Jermaine “Bones” Johnson, was sentenced to 25 years in prison last week for his role in the crime.

Members of Cosby’s family addressed the court prior to sentencing, asking the Gary family for forgiveness. They also urged the judge not to take Cosby’s life without being certain he was the person responsible for the fatal shooting.

After hearing testimony and statements in the case, Chaney sentenced Cosby to the maximum penalty of life in prison for the murder conviction.
