VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — An abandoned home on 3rd North near Jackson was lost to an early morning structure fire.

A neighbor reported hearing popping sounds, and when they looked outside, they saw flames shooting through the roof. At one point, the occupied home to the south of the structure caught on fire. According to the resident of that home, they used their garden hose to put out the fire until firefighters arrived to assist.

At a few minutes after 4 a.m., the fire was reported to the Vicksburg Warren 911 Call Center. Units from the Central Fire Station, Engine 7, Platform 1, Battalion 1, Daryl Carson, Fire Medic 40, and Vicksburg Fire Chief Trey Martin responded to the fire. “We believe the structure is vacant,” said Carson.

Vicksburg Police, including Bobby Jones, assisted and evacuated the homes to the north and south of the fire due to the danger of the fire spreading. The fire had burned through the roof at the back of the structure, causing it to collapse, by the time firefighters arrived. Firefighters worked to contain the fire and stop it from spreading to the adjacent properties. At one point, they had two hoses and four firefighters working the southern side of the structure to prevent the brick exterior wall from falling into the home to the south. There is no word on the cause of the fire, but neighbors reported seeing homeless individuals going in and out of the structure over the past few weeks.
