Hinds Head Coach Larry Williams to Step Down After 8 Years
RAYMOND, Miss. – Hinds Community College Head Football Coach Larry Williams has announced he is stepping down at the end of the semester.
Williams has coached two stints at Hinds, from 2003 to 2009 and from 2013 to the present. He was the defensive coordinator prior to being named head coach in 2017.
“Larry Williams has played a key role in the life of our football program for many years, and he has left an indelible mark on those who have known him,” said Hinds President Dr. Stephen Vacik. “His commitment to player success both off and on the field has helped so many young men realize their potential and achieve a better life. Though he is stepping away from the program, Coach Williams will always remain a member of the Hinds family, and I thank him for his investment in the mission of our college.”
As defensive coordinator in 2013, his defensive unit finished 14th in the nation in total defense.
After becoming head coach, he led his 2017 team to Hinds’ first berth in the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges playoffs since 2013. The team finished in the top 25 in 19 team statistical categories, including yards per game, first downs, third down conversions, third down conversion percentage, kick return average and red zone percentages. Five players from this team received MACJC First Team All-State honors with four of those being named to the National Junior College Athletic Association All-Region 23 Team.
In 2019, his third season as head coach, Williams led the Hinds team to the final NJCAA rank of eighth, advancing the team to the Graphic Edge Bowl in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The MACJC and the NJCAA recognized 10 players were recognized for their play on the field. Seventeen players inked with a four-year university on signing day.
Hinds will launch a nationwide search for a new head coach with the goal of naming a replacement by the end of the year.
