Horsing Around; man on horseback seen crossing I-20 in Vicksburg
VICKSBURG, MS – A man on horseback has been videoed crossing multiple lanes of interstate traffic today in Vicksburg.
In a VDN live, the man can be seen on horseback crossing from the Westbound lanes of travel on I-20 to the median. The rider then crossed the eastbound lane to South Frontage Road. That roadway was recently renamed in honor of Dr. Bill Pierce.
During the live stream, the legality of such behavior was discussed. One person commented that old laws are still in effect and allow equestrian travel on roadways. Another commenter noted that even if it is legal, is it smart to do so?
The horse seems well-trained and well-managed by the rider. However, there is a state code that may apply: Mississippi Code 63-3-509 states, in part:
(1) No motor vehicle shall be driven at a speed less than thirty miles per hour on federal designated highways where no hazard exists. The video shows the horse moving at a speed far less than 30 miles per hour on a federally designated highway.
The Vicksburg Daily News contacted local law enforcement, who were unsure of the exact code that applies and the legality. However, an unnamed highway patrol source confirmed that riding a horse on the interstate is illegal.
