VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — In just two years, Hype Athletics has become a go-to destination for young athletes in Vicksburg looking to sharpen their skills in tumbling and cheerleading.

Founded in 2023 by Beverly Taylor and Rogers “Coach Kolby” Wesley, the faith-based program offers a wide range of classes for children as young as 18 months up to teenagers. Its activities include an All-Star Cheer Team, Mommy & Me classes for ages 18 months to 4 years, beginner tumbling for ages 7-18, tiny tumbling for ages 4-7, advanced Level 1 tumbling, and advanced Level 2 and 3 tumbling. Private lessons are also available.

Taylor said the idea began with a simple request from her son.

“My son came to me one day and said this is what he wanted to do,” Taylor said. “I saw that it was something positive, so we went for it. We started with just a mat and an idea.”

Wesley, who began cheerleading as a senior at Warren Central High School, quickly realized tumbling would be essential to his success. He dedicated himself to learning the skill and went on to become captain of the Alcorn State University cheerleading team.

“I kept pushing and did what I needed to do,” Wesley said.

The coaches’ experience and dedication have fueled the organization’s rapid growth. In addition to local training, Hype Athletics gives young athletes opportunities to travel and compete. Last year, their All-Star Cheerleading team performed in Nashville, Destin, Fla., Orange Beach, Ala., and Biloxi. The squad brought home the Grand Champion title in Destin and earned Best Tumbling honors at the Deep South competition.

Hype Athletics has also partnered with area schools to host cheer camps, sharing their expertise with programs such as Port Gibson High School, St. Aloysius Flashettes, Vicksburg High School and other teams across Mississippi.

Taylor and Wesley say their mission goes beyond competition results. They aim to provide a supportive, faith-centered environment where athletes can grow in confidence, discipline and skill.

Hype Athletics is located at 4000 South Frontage Road, Suite 108B. For more information, visit their Facebook page or follow them on other social media platforms.
