VICKSBURG, Miss. – The Vicksburg Fire Department has released the findings of the investigation surrounding the fire at 718 Mattingly Street on Monday, December 9, 2024 that claimed the life of 31-year-old Shiquira Maniel. According to the investigation, the fire originated in the kitchen and has been ruled as accidental.

An investigation conducted by Fire Investigator Nathaniel Williams of the Vicksburg Fire Department, in collaboration with Orlon Smith of the Mississippi State Fire Marshal’s Office and Kevin Wilson of Crain & Associates Technical Investigation Services, determined the fire originated in the kitchen due to “unattended cooking”.

According to reports, Maniel was in the bathroom at the time.

“This devastating incident serves as a heartbreaking reminder of the fragility of life,” said Vicksburg Fire Chief Derrick Stamps, “It underscores the importance of practicing fire exit drills within our homes to safeguard ourselves and our loved ones.”
